Ideal for drying

To assess the dietary suitability of a carbohydrate-rich food, we evaluate its glycemic index (GI) and its caloric load. The glycemic index essentially measures the rate at which a carbohydrate is absorbed by the body. The higher the GI, the greater the body's response to regulate this unnecessary blood sugar spike. This response is the secretion of insulin, which aims to convert these sugars into fat reserves. Excess sugar is therefore converted into fat, and if you regularly consume such high-GI carbohydrates, insulin resistance can develop, potentially leading to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Metabolically speaking, one of the only times you can consume high-GI sugars is immediately after a workout, as these sugars will be used to store as intramuscular glycogen, which will serve as an energy reserve for future training sessions. Conversely, carbohydrates with a low glycemic index are absorbed more slowly by the body and are more in line with its natural metabolism. If you consume them in small quantities, they are not stored as fat. That's the glycemic index. Caloric load is simpler to define. It is simply the number of calories present in a given mass of food, for example, 100 grams.

Having defined these two concepts, we could add vitamin, mineral, and fiber content as important elements. Fiber actively contributes to the feeling of satiety, which is very helpful when following a low-calorie diet. But let's get back to our smoothie. This frozen smoothie provides small amounts of complex carbohydrates with a low glycemic index. It also provides a good amount of quality protein, vitamins, and minerals, has a fairly low glycemic index, and a relatively low calorie count. This nutritional profile makes it ideal as a snack or as an evening meal replacement within a controlled diet. Having tested it ourselves, we can say that we felt quite satiated, which allowed us to follow this diet as an evening meal replacement for three weeks without any problems and with pleasure, combined with intensive cross-training.

The ingredients

  • Wholegrain rice flour
Wholegrain rice flour is an excellent source of carbohydrates with a low glycemic index. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and contains magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. Wholegrain rice flour is also a source of B vitamins. Furthermore, because it is uncooked, its structure and glycemic index remain unchanged by cooking.
Its use in moderate or small quantities is therefore recommended in this recipe.
  • Sub Zero whey isolate
As stated above, this is undenatured whey protein isolate, without hydrolysate, obtained by triple cold filtration from fresh milk, and enriched with a full-spectrum essential amino acid matrix. Sub Zero therefore provides your body with the highest quality protein it needs for nourishment.
  • Frozen red berries
Red berries are very interesting from a nutritional point of view. Indeed, they contain less sugar than most other fruits, and are rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Brown flax seeds
We use brown flax seeds for their valuable Omega-3 content. We won't go into detail about the benefits of Omega-3 in this post.
  • Crushed ice and water
Crushed ice is used here to give it an icy milkshake texture. The water activates your body's drainage and hydrates you.

The recipe

  • 5 large ice cubes
  • 400 ml of water
  • 3 tablespoons of wholegrain rice flour
  • 1 dose of Sub Zero (approximately 30g) vanilla flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons of brown flax seeds
  • 1 cup of frozen red berries (150 g)

Place five large ice cubes in a blender. Blend on high speed for two seconds to crush the ice. (Be careful, it's noisy!) Then add 400 ml of water, three tablespoons of wholegrain rice flour, one vanilla-flavored Sub Zero sachet, two teaspoons of brown flax seeds, and one cup of frozen berries (about 150 g). Blend everything for 30 seconds on high speed. Pour the mixture into a tall glass.

There you go! It's ready! You can enjoy this delicious frozen red fruit smoothie with a natural bamboo straw.
